“LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas State Police stands by its decision to engage in a recent pursuit that reached more than 100 mph and ended with an infant being ejected from a vehicle. On May 24, an ASP trooper attempted to stop a 2012 Toyota Highlander for a traffic violation, according to the state police. The driver reportedly failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued. The trooper did not know children were in the vehicle, according to ASP. The vehicle reportedly reached speeds over 100 mph as it left the Camden city limits and continued south on Ouachita County Road 47. The driver reportedly passed several vehicles and swerved into oncoming traffic. Two tactical vehicle intervention attempts were unsuccessful, according to ASP. After a lengthy pursuit, the driver reportedly lost control in a curve, left the roadway, traveled through a yard, struck a light pole and overturned. A trooper attended to a 4-month-old child who reportedly was unrestrained and ejected from the vehicle, according to ASP. Troopers extracted three other children, all younger than 6, from the vehicle, which was close to live electrical wires. “The suspect’s decisions placed four innocent victims in harm’s way. At any point during the pursuit, the suspect could have stopped. He refused to stop. The danger created that day was the direct result of the suspect’s actions,” Troop F Capt. Rick Neill said in a news release. The four children were taken by ambulance to Ouachita County Medical Center for evaluation and treated for minor injuries. The mother of the children was notified and responded to the hospital. “When a suspect chooses to flee from law enforcement at high speeds, the danger to the public is immediate and serious,” ASP Col. Mike Hagar said. “We stand by our pursuit policies. We will continue to hold offenders accountable. When suspects have children in their vehicles, they should be punished accordingly.” The driver, Tyrice Fletcher, 28, was taken into custody and transported to Ouachita County Detention Center. Troopers searched the vehicle and reportedly found a defaced firearm and illegal marijuana. Fletcher, a convicted felon, was charged with felony fleeing, possession of a defaced firearm, possession of firearm by certain persons, four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, criminal mischief, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, four counts of no child passenger restraint, reckless driving, no driver’s license, no seatbelt and improper passing on the left.
Portions of the Trooper’s incident report:
On May 24, 2026, at approximately 3:16 p.m., I attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Warren Street near Lee Street in Camden for a seatbelt violation. The vehicle involved was a black 2012 Toyota Highlander. After turning around at Lee Street, I initiated my emergency lights as I caught up to the vehicle near Tate Street. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Tyrice Fletcher, continued southbound on Warren Street and did not stop. I activated my siren as the vehicle traveled south on Warren Street before it turned left onto Fairview Road and fled eastbound toward Mt. Holly Road. The vehicle then turned right onto Mt. Holly Road and began traveling southbound at speeds exceeding 108 MPH. The vehicle continued south on Mt. Holly Road, onto State Highway 387, and then onto Ouachita County Road 47. The vehicle improperly passed several vehicles on the left, and drove on the wrong side of the road nearly colliding head-on with two other vehicles. At approximately 3:22 p.m, I attempted a second TVI, which was also unsuccessful. At approximately 3:23 p.m., Mr. Fletcher attempted to negotiate a right-hand curve at speeds exceeding 90 MPH but lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle then ran off the east side of the roadway, where it struck a trash can and a mailbox before continuing southbound in the east roadside ditch. The vehicle then traveled over two residential driveways before it struck a Ouachita Electric Utility Pole. After striking the utility pole, the vehicle overturned approximately three times as it continued southbound in the east roadside ditch of Ouachita County Road 47 a short distance before it came to final rest on its right side. I observed a small infant child fall from the rear of the vehicle onto the ground. At that time, Corporal Jimmy Plyler arrived on scene. While Corporal Plyler provided cover on the vehicle, I ran to the infant lying on the ground, picked her up, and carried her behind my patrol unit for cover. During the search of the vehicle, Corporal Plyler located a tan and black 9mm handgun without a serial number on the front driver’s side floorboard. The firearm contained 17 live rounds in the magazine with an empty chamber. A report was filed with the Child Abuse Hotline.”
